Art Show in Staller

10:00 pm

Hi everyone! Currently showing in the Staller Center Art Gallery is an excellent show entitled “Prosthetic Memory: Bodies, Bits and Devices” by Christa Erickson. Erickson is an Associate Professor of the Art Department here at Stony Brook. This multi-media electronic exhibition is very interesting, interactive, and just fabulous!! The Gallery is open Tuesday – Friday 12:00(noon) – 4:00 PM and Saturday evening 7:00 – 9:00 PM. The opening reception is this Saturday, February 10, 2007 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. As always, admission is free and I strongly encourage you all to poke in and take a stroll around the Gallery. This show is truly phenomenal.

Gosh! It is frigid outside! Everyone, please stay warm!!!

Back to school!

10:35 pm

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a safe and fantastic holiday and break!!! I know I did! Finals week was absolutely crazy and I couldn’t wait to get home. Once home, I slept, slept, and slept some more! I enjoyed the Christmas holiday with my family and returned to Long Island for New Years festivities. Then, I went down to Washington, D.C. to visit with my older sister. We went shopping, to the movies, ate some really delicious falafel, and went to the National Museum of American Art. As much fun as I was having at home with my friends and family, I couldn’t wait to get back to Stony Brook! Now, I’m back and I’m loving every minute! This semester I am enrolled in ARS491 (Public Art), ARS366 (Sculpture: Modeling, Carving, and Casting), ARH322 (American Art since 1947), ARH328 (Art in West Africa), and ITL111 (Introductory Italian 1). All of my classes are fabulous and I am so thrilled that it actually snowed today!!!
I hope everyone is off to a great start! Good luck with your semester and I’ll talk to you soon!!

HI! sorry it’s been awhile!!!

3:33 am

Hey guys!!! Sorry again for the huge lapse between posts but as you know school is quite hectic. Regardless, I hope you have all been well and studying hard! The second round of exams came and went and it is almost time for Thanksgiving break!! I can’t wait to go home but am so sad because once Thanksgiving is over there are only a few weeks before finals then the semester is over!! ☹
I have been very busy with various art projects, in painting we finally moved from still lives to figure drawing, which is very exciting! My birthday was earlier in the week, so my mother and little sister came to visit me this past weekend! We didn’t do too much, since they were here for such a short visit. We did however have a lovely dinner at Sole Mio, an adorable Italian restaurant right off campus in the Walbaum’s plaza. On Saturday we had our opening reception for the new show “Civic Performance” at the Art Gallery in Staller Center for the Arts, which went very well! SO! If you ever have a free moment you should definitely check out the show! There are a lot of digital pieces, so allow yourself some time to make it through the show. There are 10 different artists featured, so it is a pretty large show! The Gallery is open Tues-Fri 12pm-4pm and most Saturday evenings 7pm-9pm. Tomorrow, (Fri Nov 17) it will be open 7-9PM and Saturday there is a special “civic” performance and presentation, which begins at 4pm!
I am very excited to check out the Gallery this weekend THEN THANKSGIVING BREAK! YEY! I am looking forward to seeing all the family… and for an ever so slight vacation from college!
I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving, good luck on any exams, and I will talk to you soon!!!

The first two weeks of my second year at SBU!!

6:33 pm

Hi everyone!!!
Sorry again for the huge lapse between my entries, but as I am sure you have come to realize, college life can get pretty busy! I hope everyone has had a fun-filled, exciting, interesting, and liberating first two weeks of college! I know I have! So this semester I am taking three studio classes: Sculpture, Painting, and Printmaking, in addition to American Art History from 1870-1945, an Anthropology course on Sex and Human Nature, and lastly I am a TA for SSO101, which I am sure some of my readers are familiar with!!! I continue to work at the Seawolves Marketplace, which is busier than ever, but I also began working at the Art Gallery in the Staller Center, which you all should definitely check out in your spare time. It’s so exciting to be back in school, and I find that curious since I was here all summer! Life on campus is so different now compared to that of the summer. The constant bustle and high energy is just amazing! I wish everyone the best of luck in finalizing their course schedule and in their first semester here at Stony Brook!!
Talk to you soon!!!!!!

The summer is almost over :(

3:39 pm

Hey guys!! I am so sorry I haven’t posted any blogs the past few weeks, I have just been so busy with my classes, which are coming to an end, and working two jobs!! It’s officially August, as you are already aware, which means the summer is almost over!!! The second session of classes ends next Tuesday, which means, finals are coming up so quickly! I found that some of the great things about taking summer classes at SBU are I got to enjoy an independent summer totally away from home, I was much closer to the city for those weekend getaways, I had the opportunity to keep learning more and more and meeting more and more people in the relaxed setting of the summer sessions, and that despite the insane intensity of the courses, you have to take so many fewer quizzes! Spending the summer here at SBU was such a fantastic experience! I have learned a lot about myself, and a lot from the fascinating courses I took. I learned a lot about other people and have grown so much stronger along the way. I think summer sessions have such a bad rap, its not just for nerds (I’m kidding guys, I’m a total nerd, but also totally cool!!), summer school is for anyone who loves to learn something new everyday and to challenge themselves. I have had such an amazing summer, despite the hectic I-have-no-time aspect, that I am already planning for next summer. My plans thus far are to study abroad in Rome for 4 weeks then tromp around Europe for a week or so after that. Learning can be so much fun! You just have to study what you truly enjoy!

Anyways, I have a museum paper due tonight in my Art History class in which I wrote about Jackson Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm. For any art buffs out there, Pollock is my most favorite artist ever!!!!!

My plan for the rest of this week/weekend is to study study study!!!! And then on Sunday, my Art History class is taking a trip into NYC to go to the Museum of Modern Art! So hopefully by Monday I will be more than prepared for my Holocaust final and equally prepared for my Art History final which is on Tuesday!!

Wish me luck!!

My fabulous weekend and busy week

11:20 pm

This past weekend, my mother and younger sister came down from Binghamton to visit me. We had a blast!! On Thursday, we went to the Tanger Outlets and spent the entire day shopping till we were too exhausted to tromp through another store, searching for amazing deals. That evening we went to see The Devil Wears Prada at the movie theatre right off campus. Oh my goodness, the movie was absolutely amazing! Well, I mean to say that the clothes, shoes, and purses were FABULOUS! On Friday, before we headed to the city, we stopped at the Smithhaven Mall for some more much needed shopping. Then, we took the LIRR into NYC, walked through Central Park and headed to Yankee Stadium for a Yankee game. It was a perfect night for a baseball game, which by the way, was absolutely jam-packed with action, suspense and joy at the Yankee’s win over the White Sox. Saturday, which was my favorite day of the whole weekend, we drove to Robert Moses Beach and spent the entire day lounging on the beach, swimming, riding the waves, and of course, sun bathing!!! After a long weekend we dragged ourselves back to the hotel, looking forward to our comfy beds.
Of course this fantastic weekend could not last forever, this week I started my second job on campus. Now I am working at the Seawolves Marketplace and in the Wellness Center. Conveniently, both are in the SAC and quite a short walk from the West Apartments. My week is pretty busy between classes and work, but somehow I manage to get everything done on time and still have time to dabble in art and indulge in leisure reading.
Second session is in full swing and the summer is already half over!!! Again, I am taking a history class on the Holocaust and an art history class from the Renaissance till Post-Modernism. Both classes are quite heavy in reading and class lectures, but are definitely worth every minute. I am enjoying these classes immensely and learning so much!!
OK, homework time!! I’ll talk to you soon!!!

OH finals!!

10:45 am

SO this past week and especially during the weekend I have been so busy with preparing for my upcoming finals!! The summer session is funny because while it is more relaxed and fun, since it is so short the midterms and finals come upon students so suddenly! I am really glad to be studying this summer; it has just been a little hectic these past few days. Earlier this week was the 4th of July and for the day, I visited my friend who lives just outside the city, so getting to his house was very easy because of the LIRR stop on-campus. So that little trip was a great way to de-stress right before finals. And thankfully, I will have a way to de-stress after finals since my mother and little sister are coming to visit me for 4 days!! We plan to spend time both on the island going to different beachesand boardwalks, and in NYC seeing a Yankee game, shopping in Chinatown and visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art. But before that, I have my Art History final this afternoon followed by a brief test for the bartending class I took through the Craft Center in the Student Union and my Financial Accounting final tomorrow evening. Wish me luck!!

This is me!

11:47 pm

Hey, everyone! I’m Christine and I am studying here at Stony Brook University this summer for both sessions. Right now I am taking art history from prehistoric time up to 1400A.D. and a business class on financial accounting. In about two weeks, I am going to be taking another art history class from 1400A.D. up to postmodernism and a history class on the Holocaust. I am also working this summer. Right now I am working at the Seawolves Marketplace, which is right inside the Student Activity Center and it is like a CVS or a Duane Reed except it has a coffee bar in it!! On the weekends, I also waitress for a catering company at various parties, and I might be picking up a third job at the Wellness Center, which is the gym inside the SAC. So, between work and classes, I am quite busy, but I still have time to see my friends! This is also such a great location to be at for the summer because of all the beaches nearby and of course, NYC is only a train ride away!!! This first month has really flown by and I am having so much fun here! My new roommate and I get along famously, and I am really enjoying my classes.
